The loss of cognitive abilities with age, which manifests itself in a mild form of dementia, affects a significant part of the population. A newly published study from Japan found that regular consumption of green tea has been shown to protect against mild senile dementia. The many health-promoting properties of green tea have been extensively researched over the past few decades. The new study was able to prove that the drink, unlike black tea or coffee, also has a positive influence on mental health. All subjects who took part in the study were over sixty years old and were regularly examined for their brain functions between 2007 and 2013. The analysis of the evaluations showed that the risk of developing dementia decreased.
Matcha Tea and Mental Health
For years, researchers in medicine have recommended drinking green tea, especially matcha tea, on a regular basis to maintain health. At the start of the study, after blood tests, lifestyle interviews, and a detailed medical history, participants were also assessed for mental health and the results recorded and compared. As part of the study, the scientists determined the cognitive abilities of the test subjects at regular intervals and analyzed whether symptoms of dementia were already present or whether these developed over time.
Effective protection against the loss of mental abilities
According to research, the amount of green tea consumed is crucial for maintaining mental health. The study participants who drank green tea daily or several times a week showed significantly fewer signs of senile dementia than the test subjects who mainly consumed black tea or coffee. Although these drinks also offer many advantages for general health in addition to their appealing taste, they cannot have a positive effect on cognitive abilities in advanced age.
